Weekly discussion and Th3 Waters logo...
1 Cor 10: 1-6
1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They all ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. 6Now these things occurred as examples[a] to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

What do you guys think about giving 'new interpretation' to these 'old stories' from the Jewish history? Because no where does it talk about 'Jesus the rock' or anything like that. Just wondering.
Hey there tiffinita,
I think it's a good way to do 2 things in this case.
1.) The Gospel writer is using Jewish vocabulary to communicate new Christian ideas to his Hebrew audience.
2.) To a Gentile audience, this passage serves both as a quick history lesson as well as a serving of Christian doctrine.
Paul knew who he was speaking to, and he picked a good way to communicate his ideas to two different types of people at once. Just my thoughts.
-P.S. NB- St. Augustine used this technique artfully in his "City of God Against the Pagans."
